Hans started running in 4th grade, but it wasn’t until his sophomore year of high school that he started developing into a competitive middle-distance runner. During his senior year he won the state title in the 800, becoming the fourth in his family to win an Alaska state track title. After graduating in 2010, he decided to go out-of-state and attend Eastern Oregon University.
In his five years at Eastern, Hans won three NAIA national titles and graduated with degrees in both computer science and mathematics. He had considered running competitively after college while at Eastern, but it wasn’t until an injury-plagued senior season that he committed to the idea—feeling as though he still had room to improve.
Thanks in large part to former college teammates Doug Benson and Ryan Booth already being on the team, Hans joined Team Run Eugene in the fall of 2015. In the two years since joining the team, he has run personal bests in both the 800 and 1000—with his best post-collegiate performance being a sixth-place finish at the 2017 US Indoor Nationals in the 1k.
Outside of running, Hans works as a computer programmer at a local software development company. On the rare occasions when he isn’t running or programming, Hans is most likely watching basketball, playing video games, or eating a perfectly normal amount of pizza.
